Aurangabad, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is a historic city in Maharashtra, India. Renowned as the state’s “Tourism Capital”, it is the premier gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
Situated on hilly upland terrain in the Deccan, the city is steeped in medieval history. It was founded in 1610 by Malik Ambar and later served as the capital of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Because of its rich historical legacy, it is known for:
  • The City of Gates: Once containing 53 distinct gates, the surviving architecture remains a strong feature.
  • Iconic Monuments: The striking Bibi Ka Maqbara, an exquisite mausoleum built by Aurangzeb’s son that mimics the Taj Mahal, and the formidable Daulatabad Fort located just outside the city.
  • Culture & Craft: Known for its production of artistic silk fabrics (specifically Himroo shawls and Paithani saris) and local culinary delights, such as hot mawa jalebi.
  • Modern Expansion: In recent years, it has become a massive industrial and smart city hub with excellent connections to the rest of India via Aurangabad Tourism.
